A carved tixi lacquer three-tiered box and cover - Ming Dynasty, 15th/16th century

Of square section with indented corners and soft angles, raised on a foot of conforming outline, the exterior deeply carved through layers of black and red lacquer, the sides decorated with bands of ruyi-shaped lappets and dots, the top of the cover edged with similar lappets surrounding symmetrically arranged scrolls and dots, the interior and base covered with black lacquer. 20cm (7 7/8in) high.
